The Z-50 is a basic material analyzer. It uses laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). It performs air-based analysis (air burn) only, no argon purge. So like other air-burn units it is largely for basic sorting or more qualitative analysis. Eighty years of spark OES usage have proven that for quantitative, precise analysis, an argon purge is essential for OES techniques like spark or LIBS.
Great News: If you buy a Z-50 you can always upgrade it later to any other Z model with argon purge. Even carbon. Defy Obsolescence!
For the metals industry, the Z-50 is an inexpensive but reliable alloy sorting device, mostly for aluminum alloys, stainless and red metals. It will ID high-temp alloys but should not be used for precise Ni analysis. It offers base metal quantification for the environmental and minerals industries, particularly for beryllium in soil (for which there is no other handheld technique). The Z-50 is the best choice for an inexpensive alloy sorter or elemental analyzer with modest performance requirements. Add argon purge at any time to upgrade to the Z-200 for the price difference between the models.
